Assalm alykom:
I will finish another year of homeschooling in just two weeks. Since I am in a virtual public school, I do a nine month school year with three months off for summer. The school technically runs through June. However, I have finished everything early for my two children. I debate all of the time whether or not I like to have the entire summer off. I cannot decide if I would rather school the kids more laid back during the year. I would teach them, for example 4 days a week and take three days off to attend better to my household. On the other hand, I kind of like the idea of having three whole months to work on long projects. I also like the three month break to evaluate the things I did the year before. I tend to use this time to do some hard reorganization if my schooling room. My children continue in the summer to learn Quran, Arabic and Islamic studies. During this time, my husband takes the opportunity to work with them harder. I usually do not work with them at all in the summer, but this summer I want to concentrate on working with them on their multiplication tables. I think that is enough. The k12 program I use is quite intense sometimes. I think that we are all looking for the break. I would love to hear how others do the scheduling. Maybe I can get some new ideas from what I am doing now. Please let me know your ideas. Do you homeschool all year around or do you take the summer off?

waalaikum asalam warahmatullahi wa barakatahu, hmmm i have never thought about having such a long break off from teaching my kids.i dont think i could, since i have been hom educating i dont actually think we have had a break except for weekends as i am busy myself, i personally didnt like the idea of a break from teaching and laerning as i feel theres so much to learn and i want the children to understand that time must be used wisely, and mine get really bored and frustrated and i think deep down enjoy having some educational work to do. do i sound crazy? im still in my early days so maybe im still a control freak! but i do think we need time off to reorganise and re evaluate ourselves and our teaching methods. wasalam umm subhan

Like you, I only take a little time off for the two eids and the weekends. My children are learning in the summer, not from me though. My husband teaches my children in Arabic, Quran,Language, Islamic Studies and History. They are learning these subjects during the school year, but witout the secular education they can devote more time in the summer. Alhamdolilah, I have this blessing with my children and my husband. Jazakallahokharain for your response.
waalaikum aslam warahmatullahi w abarakatahu dear sister,
sister i was wondering, do u teach from a curriculum, or do u compile your own and what ages are your children?
im a recent home educator, and im trying really hard but i feel lost at times as to what i should teach and how ofetn and what goals to acheive for what age etc???
however i am usuing the well trained mind as a guide as it came so highly recommended from home educators, it sort of gives me some guidline.

In my archives for the blog you will find a section where I talk all about the cirriculum I use. Here is the link but if you have trouble copy and pasting it to your browser, you can find it in the November archives and it is called "Where do you begin?"
http://lovingallah.blogspot.com/2005/11/where-do-you-began.html#links
As far as the Well Trained Mind, I have never read the book. Everytime I try to get it at the library it is checked out. However, there are a few families locally who follow it. They are very happy with it. I have talked to them about it a few times. My apprehension with it is the Literature. They do alot of the Classical reading that is heavy in fairy tales and magic. This is not something that I want to heavily expose my kids to. This is really the only thing I know about the Well Trained Mind. Take a look at the link for how I teach my kids. If you need anymore help do not hesitate to ask.
